History of Geham State School
The State School at Geham was opened on the 4
April 1871 as the Highfields No 2 School. There was no opening ceremony, cutting of ribbons or unveiling of plaques, just a note to the Education Office from the first principal Mr John
O’Beirne stating 'I have the honour to inform you that I have opened the above
school on the 4th April.'
The school opened with an enrolment of 47 students in a wooden school house described as being '26 feet by 16 feet without verandas but with a
single porch on the south entrance used as a hat and cloak room.' The name of the school was changed to Geham State
School in 1876.
Today our school has a teaching
and ancillary staff of over 20 and an enrolment of 150 students and I am very proud
to report that Geham State School continues to grow and provide quality
education to students in our local area.
In 2021 our community
celebrated 150 years of
education at Geham State School. On the 27th March, exactly 150 years to the day that Geham State School opened its gates for the first time, we welcomed back over 1000 past and present students, teachers and families. We launched our new school song and YouTube clip Geham - Like the Old Oak Tree; listened to special guest speakers; cut the cake; planted a new oak tree; conducted a roll call; opened the old time capsule and closed the new; conducted garden and school tours and ended the day with a family dinner dance. Souvenirs of the event are still available for purchase by emailing pandc@gehamss.eq.edu.au.
